Ghostbusters (1984)

Directed by: Ivan Reitman (other than this movie, I’d say my favourite film of his would be Dave)

Written by: Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis

Starring: Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton

What it’s about: a group of supernatural investigators become the saviors of New York City thanks to their paranormal exterminator business

B-Movie Alternate Title: how about Ghost Fighters?

Movie Mash Up: I can’t really compare it with anything that comes to mind.  It has many similar qualities of recent Judd Apatow films, but it truly is a singular idea.

What I liked: great cast; despite it being nearly 30 years old, still feels somewhat timeless though very rooted in the ’80s; it’s a decent enough comedy, though I would have been happier if it was more R-rated; a story that would not have been out of place on an episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.  Love seeing William Atherton as an asshole.  Classic, quotable movie.

What I disliked: mostly how much films have changed in the nearly 30 years since, like how demonized cigarette smokers are compared to back then; it’s not as funny as I remembered it being.

Would I recommend this to anyone?: Probably everyone, yeah.  It is still a good movie, despite how much the world has changed since 1984.  I don’t think today’s kids will enjoy it much, but it still is entertaining to me.
