Scream 4 (2011)

This may be one of the most “meta” movies ever made, almost masturbatorily self-referential, almost at a “Community” level.  It’s a testament to the strength of Kevin Williamson and Ehren Kruger’s writing that it is actually a decent film, and not one of those “reboot over a decade later and have it suck” films.  It pays homage to the original Scream trilogy and successfully integrates the returning cast members (Courtney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell) into a new era.  I mean, the first Scream movie was released in 1996, during the Internet’s relative infancy and everything we take for granted nowadays, pretty much didn’t exist then.

The brand new kids in the franchise are pretty much archetypes of characters of the original trilogy (I’ve been working on portmanteau’s for that, but origilogy doesn’t really roll off the tongue) and the format of following “The Rules of Horror Movies” returns.  That’s when the film starts to suffer, because as in every Scream movie, if you’re in the cast, you’re fair game and so all those brand new kids end up as fodder for the franchise.  Everything below this except for the rating is a SPOILER JUST SO YOU KNOW.

What I just said up there is no joke.  The movie spends most of its time introducing new characters played by Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Erik Knudsen, Rory Culkin, the amazing Alison Brie and others and systematically kills them all off.  The survivors are the same three returning characters.  I’m sorry, but I’m not interested in watching 5cream starring a 40-year-old Neve Campbell still dealing with the shit that went down almost 20 years prior.  The only important new character that survived was wide-eyed Marley Shelton and while I could easily watch her in anything, she’s not what people are going to come back for.  And based on the alright box office haul of this installment, clearly the Scream name itself isn’t enough to sell the movie.  Kids these days don’t want references to stuff they don’t know, they want torture porn because the next generation is fucked up and is going to be the death of us all.  /old man rant
